HOWTO: Running eBay Blackthorne on a Windows Limited User Account

Some of the later Windows Operating Systems (XP, Server 2000, Server 2003, etc.) have implemented the ability for multiple users to use a computer with each having access to different files and applications on the computer.   In Windows XP for instance, you can set up multiple Windows users, each with their own password to access a computer.  Each user is granted either Administrator privileges or is created as a Limited Access account.

Administrators have the ability to read and write to any location on the computer, and also are allowed to install applications.  Limited Accounts are only allowed access to files created by that user or files in the Shared Documents folder.

When installing eB, it requires access to the registry and other locations on your hard drive, so it must be installed using an account that has Administrator privileges.

eB can then be run from an Administrator account, or a Limited Access account, but because eB needs to save information to the database and private registry files, you must grant Limited Access users some permissions before eB can be run from the Limited Access account.

If all users on the computer will need to use Blackthorne, you simply need to set the folder permissions on the Blackthorne folder to allow all users.  If you want to grant only a subset of users access to Blackthorne, you must create a new user group and then give the new user group access to the Blackthorne folder.

To grant all users on a computer access to eBay Blackthorne:

  1. Open a window showing the files in your C: drive.

  2. Select Tools|Folder Options... from the menu.

  3. Click the View tab.

  4. Scroll to the bottom of the Advanced settings list.

  5. Uncheck the "Use simple file sharing (Recommended)" box.

  1. Click OK to exit.

  2. Open the C:\Program Files\eBay folder (or whatever folder you installed Blackthorne into).

  3. Right click the Blackthorne folder and select Sharing and Security...

  4. In the Group or user names box, select the Users(MACHINE NAME\Users) group.

  5. Under Permissions for Users, click the Modify and Write boxes.

  6. Click OK.  All users on the computer will now have access to Blackthorne.

To grant some users access to Blackthorne:

  1. From Start|Control Panel, select Performance and Maintenance, then Administrative Tools.

  2. Double click Computer Management under Administrative Tools.

  3. Under System Tools, expand Local Users and Groups.

  4. Right click Groups and select New Group... .

  1. Enter Blackthorne Users in the Group name.

  2. Click the Add button and add each user who should have access to Blackthorne.

  1. Click Create when all members have been added.  You now have a new Group.

  2. To give that Group access to Blackthorne, follow the same steps as described above in the "To grant all users on a computer access to eBay Blackthorne:" tutorial, except in Step 9 where it says "select the Users(MACHINE NAME\Users) group", select the Blackthorne Users instead.
