I found a problem with gallery images and I do not know who to bring this too.

Image 13 shows the item "1960s Destroyer Guided DDG-20 USS Goldsborough - 6533814517" with a image of some man in the gallery image in my store. It should be of a ship. I checked the item and this is not what should be there and decided to update the item at the same time.

http://nkyphotos.com/Shot0013.jpg

I updated the item in BTPro and submitted the revisions. The gallery image had changed but not to what is suppose to be there. I am confused.

http://nkyphotos.com/Shot0014.jpg

I do not know what this is but I clicked on the item and it is correct.

http://nkyphotos.com/Shot0015.jpg

I noticed this a bit earlier when I saw the same image of a man in one of my ship pics and corrected it and saw a different image but no ship pic. I thought I was just having a bad day and let it go.

Does "Refresh - Refresh Selected Listing" refresh the ebay listing with what is in my BTPro database or does it take what is on ebay and refresh my item in my BTPro database.

I really need to take my BTPro database and refresh all 17,000+ of my listings on ebay. I probably have hundreds of gallery images that are screwed up and I do not know where they are.

I got a email today from a customer complaining about a gallery image. Now I know what the person was talking about. This is hurting my business.

This link shows the problem I have with grayed out gallery images. Since I have hundreds of these scattered all over I would like to refresh all ebay listings with my BTPro database.

James..."Shot0016" is the kind of name that suggests you're just using the name your camera gives your photos, so the picture file names are repeated. Then you upload to your webspace and the new Shot0016 replaces the old Shot0016. Before uploading pix to your website, you'll have to give 'em unique names.

I host my own photos and provide a URL to ebay to use. Why does having the last name matter since each file is in its own unique directory.

What change was made to cause this after 6 years of loading photos on ebay. I have 17,000 listings this way and it would be disastrous for me.

PS. Example

nkyphotos.com/2007/07/0001.jpg

is not the same as

nkyphotos.com/2007/01/0001.jpg

PS. They are fictitious URLs I think but I am using them as an example.

Yes I upload my photos to different directories each month. It is part of my routine. Besides, go into the item and look. You will see a different image but correct image.

Not sure where this might come from. The only thing I can think of is that eBay Gallery will NOT re-generate your picture in Search results if you have changed the content of your picture file without changing the file name. This behavior is different from what appears inside your listing on eBay where the picture is actually being read from the file each time.

I cannot be the only seller who hosts their own photos. Note I am dealing with two separate problems here which might be related and might not.

First is the grayed out gallery image which started after stores were put into core in March.

Second is the random gallery image that is not related to what is in the item. This is a recent problem that may have started a couple of weeks ago.

Still, I am in need of a way to take my entire BTPro database and refresh all my listings on ebay. I cannot be spending 20 hours over and over again fixing grayed out images. Something needs to change somewhere.

The gray gallery image typically happens when eBay can't load the image you specify for the gallery.
At listing time eBay takes a copy of the image you specify for the gallery and hosts it on it's own servers. If eBay can't access the file when it goes to take that copy you get a gray box for the search thumbnail for the duration of the listing.

Maybe you could use a host monitoring service for a while to see if there is any downtime with your host?

For the other issue, do you have any examples of the random gallery images that are live now? I looked at the one in the original post and I see the same image for search, at the top of the listing, and in the listing itself.

I don't think it's related to image hosting.

For grayed out and random gallery images, does a revise fix the issue?

I can fix the gray'd out problem but it is very time consuming using ebays fix. I have to go online and manually submit each item to be changed. Plus, I have to find them.

What would happen if all 17,000 were screwed up. I never could fix them all. BTPro needs the capability to do this.

I will see if I can find some new items with random gallery images.

It is easy to find the gray'd out images.

Just go into my store and click on the ship link. Next go to the bottom of each page and click on the next page. By the time you get to page 3 you will see plenty of them. Page after page of them.

The other problem may have disappeared. I cannot find any images that seem out of place.

You will notice the pile of gray'd out images comes due to recycle around the 1st. This is what I mean when I said they started when ebay cut over to stores in core around end of March. I was able to determine that the problem existed for about 7 days (roughly 1st to the 7th of April) and it ceased "to the best of my knowledge". I fixed all the items I could find and noticed that they were back again in June. Nothing seems to make sense but they all seem to be old items I did in 2005-2006.

I just went through one page of items and every single gray'd out item was made in 2006-2004. Every one that was fine was dated from 2007 and after. It makes no sense to me.

I had a similar problem for the past couple of weeks, but to my surprise, I have received the following email from eBay:

-------------------------------------------
There was an issue generating the Gallery picture for your listing:1960 USSR Gomz Smena 6 35mm Camera w/ Case & Flash (#160462363645)

Why it didn't work:
We could not connect to the Web server name specified by:
http://www.planet4sale.ca/blackthorne//2010-01/2010-07-29_16-43-18_0001.JPG

Here's how to fix it:
Check your picture URL to make sure that it is correct.
You can correct your URL at:
http://cgi5.ebay.com/ws1/eBayISAPI.dll?DisplayGalleryImagePageV3&Item=160462363645

To fix the error with your picture, click "Resolve issue."

This is an automatically generated email, so we won't receive any replies sent to this address.

-------------------------------------------

This is strange, never had any problems with my "Web Server" but, perhaps, I have too many images in that folder. I am going to create a new subfolder for my images and see if the problem is fixed for the future listings.

http://www.fauland.com/af5.htm

A.F.5 is a very good program to rename your files. I do mine on date:
After creating a folder in 2010, I create 29072010 and do the following:

Two strings and one counter:
29072010, juli2010, and the counter 100-900
If I make more pictures the same day I name it
29072010a, and so on.

You will see that the picture name after renaming will be this:
29072010juli2010100.JPG
29072010juli2010101.JPG

and so on. That way, and it takes less then a minute, you will never have to be scared of overwriting a picture again. Even my crew, 9 part-timers, do not make any mistakes with this.

What makes it better, is that when I move a folder with pictures in it, and the database lost it's link, I always know where to look and how to correct it.

James, here is what's happening with your gallery images: recently the size of gallery images on eBay has changed and since your items were posted a long time ago, your gallery images didn't get generated to the new size.

Here is the the tool you can use to correct the gallery images on the items:
http://cgi5.ebay.com/ws1/eBayISAPI.dll?DisplayGalleryImagePageV3

We have already corrected your item #6616243634 to make sure it works.

Example, look at the revision summery for item 6266002014 which has a gray'd out gallery image. I fixed it on May 31st.

That is why I am upset. I cannot be spending 20 hours over and over again fixing gallery images. Also, why did it only affect 7 days of gallery images?

I just went and browses some random pages in my ebay at 200 items per page. For the next 5 days I have a large amount of gray'd out gallery image items coming up for recycle again. Once I get past that point no problems. I did not check the days that have already recycled but I would bet there is a day or two worth of screwed up gallery images which would give me 7 days worth again.

I have seen this before and it does not make sense. Only old items as far as I can tell (pre-2007) and they happen to recycle near for 7 days near the first of the month. The was noticed in early May (by others including me) which means it probably started at the cutover in late March to stores in core. They started that about 1-2 days early which fits the time-line nicely since I am seeing the problem now a day or so before the 1st.

I am going to go out and fix them manually again but BTPro needs to be changed to force a refresh of everything in the item. This could put anyone out of business and it would be no fault of their own.

PS. I worked as a software developer for 14 years and this does not make sense to me.

Only old items over a 7 day period are affected and it happens every month as far as I can tell. Old items after a certain point in time are OK.

Found a new one where the gallery image is gray'd out. I fixed this one June 30th and May 11th.

6174651998

You can do a search within my store using the keyword 2005* and click on the box to search the description. I was hunting for old listings to run at auction when I found these. There are more. These were around 9 pages deep and have 25 days 22 hours till they recycle again which means this just happened near the beginning of the month again.
